If your palms sweat when it is time to visit the dentist, or you need dental work, sedation dentistry can provide the comfortable care you need. However, it can be expensive. Although you can use your dental insurance for preventive and restorative services, many policies don’t cover sedation dentistry, but there are exceptions. Here’s what you need to know to keep dental sedation within your budget.
Dental Insurance May Cover Sedation
Dental sedation is classified as “non-essential dental procedures” by many dental insurance companies when used for elective services, like porcelain veneers. However, your dental insurance may cover some of the expenses for sedation dentistry if it lowers the overall cost of the dental treatment. This can be the case if treatment must be delayed or spaced out from anxiety, complex procedures, and other situations. If dental care is impossible without the use of sedation, such as from a disability or serious medical condition, your insurance may pay for it.
Your dentist will work on your behalf to maximize any applicable coverage. If dental sedation is medically necessary, your insurance may pay some of the costs after meeting your annual deductible until you reach your yearly limit.
Types of Dental Sedation
There are many types of dental sedation available. Your dentist will determine the best option for your situation, which may include:
- Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation is a mild sedative that’s taken before your appointment. It allows you to reach deep relaxation, but it won’t render you unconscious. However, don’t be surprised if you doze off for a quick nap.
- Nitrous Oxide: Better known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is the safest for most patients, including children. The inhaled sedative takes effect quickly and wears off just as fast.
- IV Sedation: Patients requiring oral surgery, like tooth extractions, may benefit from a sedative that’s delivered intravenously. You will sleep through your appointment and have little memory of your procedure.
- General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is recommended for patients with invasive treatment plans, like jaw surgery. It’s performed in a hospital setting.
Dental sedation is an excellent option to keep you comfortable while in the dentist’s chair, even if money is tight. Besides using your dental insurance, many dental practices accept third-party financing, like CareCredit. You can pay any out-of-pocket expenses using a monthly payment plan that fits your budget.
