Wisdom tooth extraction surgery can leave your mouth feeling sore, making a good night’s sleep seem like a distant dream. However, adequate rest is essential for healing and minimizing discomfort. But how do you get the sleep you need when your jaw is throbbing?

If you need help getting to dreamland after your wisdom tooth extraction, continue reading.

1. Elevate Your Head

Elevating your head slightly with an extra pillow can help reduce swelling and promote better blood circulation. Doing this can lessen your jaw pain and reduce the throbbing in your mouth. With these ills out of the way, it will be easier to find a comfortable sleeping position.

2. Avoid Sleeping on the Extraction Site

If possible, try to sleep on the side opposite to where you had your extraction. This helps minimize pressure on the surgical sites, reducing the risk of disturbing the healing process.

3. Make Your Bedding More Comfortable

If you normally sleep with a firmer pillow for support, you might need to soften it up for a few nights. Downy pillows and cozy blankets can enhance your comfort, making it easier to drift off and stay asleep. If you can’t change your bedding, then opt to enhance your sleeping environment through white noise or aromatherapy.

4. Use Ice Packs Before Sleep

Applying an ice pack to your cheek before bedtime can help soothe any lingering inflammation. This also serves to numb the area around the extraction site, making sleep more possible without disturbing it.

5. Use Over the Counter Pain Medication

If you’re still having trouble falling asleep, you can try taking some pain medication. If your dentist has prescribed some, take it as directed. These medications can help alleviate discomfort, making it easier for you to relax. Don’t take more of any medication than is prescribed. If you’re still in pain, schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

It’s important to remember that the discomfort after wisdom tooth extractions is temporary. It can be stressful and a bit daunting to try to sleep while you’re in pain, but by implementing these tips, you’ll give your body the rest it needs. Soon, you’ll be on your way to a more comfortable recovery.
